There really are pix, I swear! But first...
On Saturday October 28, 2000 the car clubs and hearse club, the psychos and
punks, and gearheads and rockers of SoCal converged on Irvine, California to celebrate
the horror and humor of Halloween at Blood Drive
2000. The first annual
celebration of music and hot rods!
Phantom Coaches was the only hearse club in attendance, and due to an
early deadline for reservations only 10 coaches could be accommodated. There
were plenty of other car clubs though: The Slackers, The Pedestrian Killers, the
Lucky Devils, Bad Influence, Barons, Mishifts, Hecklers, Beatniks, Deacons,
Pandilla de Lobos, Negative Camber, The Choppers, & Hellbilly Boys. If you
didn't find somethin' with four wheels to drool over, you musta been blind!
And the tunes! Twelve bands on two stages! Not at the same time, just so when
one band was playin', the the next was settin' up. Almost no lag time between
bands! Each band played for between 25 & 75 minutes. The bands where (in
order): Speedbuggy,
The Amazing
Crowns, Blazing
Haley, Zen
Guerrilla, Throw
Rag,
Hellbound Hayride, Bleeders,
Zeke, Supersuckers,
The Misfits,
The Damned, and
(drum roll please)...X! I'm sorry, but most of the bands where a blur. The stand
outs for me were: Speedbuggy, 'cause I thought they just rocked; The Misfits,
'cause their new lead singer had a rough time with the lyrics; The Damned,
'cause they were a pale imitation of the band I saw 14 years ago & their fog
machine went berzerk; But the standout of the whole show was X! Back with the
original lineup: Exene, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebreak! Nobody can
rock harder! Except for a little problem with the rhythm section at the start of
"The Unheard Music", they were flawless. they even played "Johny
Hit and Run Paulene" (they said years ago that they wouldn't play it in
concert anymore)! It was like stepping back 20 years and slammin' the
night away! By the way, they were wrong about Clapton: Billy Zoom is God!
I had a bitchin' time! Showin' off the coach and coffin. Groovin' on all the
rides and tunes. Even said "hi" to some of you HEARSE DRIVERs! I can't
wait 'til next year!
...Now, on to the pix!
